Students from Bayport-Blue Point High School’s Science Education Group worked with Academy Street Elementary School’s fourth graders in facilitating interactive science labs focused on sound and light. The high school volunteers, who are interested in science and potential future careers in teaching, created hands-on lessons that aligned with the fourth graders' current science curriculum.

The fourth graders first explored sound energy, learning about vibrations, volume and how sound travels. Through a fun experiment with cups and string, they discovered how sound changed as they bent or straightened the string.

Next, the students delved into the concepts of light refraction, reflection and magnification. They used prisms and magnifying glasses to see firsthand how light behaves in different ways.

The collaboration offered Academy Street’s students a memorable opportunity to connect with the high schoolers while deepening their understanding of the subjects. Meanwhile, the high schoolers not only honed their teaching skills but also had the unique chance to make a meaningful impact on Bayport-Blue Point’s younger students.
