students with turtles

Kindergarteners in Mrs. Esposito’s class at Sylvan Avenue Elementary learned all about marine reptiles and some of their terrestrial counterparts through a hands-on program facilitated by the Cornell Cooperative Extension Suffolk County.

Throughout the program, students learned intriguing facts about marine iguanas, sea snakes, green sea turtles, crocodiles, lizards and more, including how the animals adapt to survive in unique environments. Students asked questions such as, Why are some snakes poisonous while others aren't? and Why do animals need camouflage?

In addition to learning about these reptiles, students had the opportunity to get up close and personal with some of them, including a leopard gecko, ball python, corn snake, bearded dragon and Pueblan milk snake.
