Ahead of Veterans Day on Nov. 9, students at Blue Point Elementary in the Bayport- Blue Point School District honored the community’s veterans with a special assembly.
Cooking for Long Island Veterans, an organization that ensures homebound veterans with mobility or health limitations receive healthy meals and groceries delivered to their homes, showed a video of their work in action and spoke to students about what they do and how students can help. The organization was then awarded $500 made possible by the school’s fundraising efforts.
Students then lined up on stage to set a remembrance table for those who serve and do not return home. The table was set with various items of symbolic meaning, including a white tablecloth, symbolizing the purity of their motives when answering the call to serve, a slice of lemon, reminding of us their bitter fate and an empty chair, representing their seat that remains unclaimed at the table.
The ceremony culminated with a one-of-a-kind flash mob poem in which each grade stood section by section, reciting a verse from a poem, thanking veterans. The students then cheered for the community’s veterans in attendance as they stood one-by-one and sang “American the Beautiful” and “God Bless the USA”.
