Second graders in Rebecca Tilden’s class at Academy Street Elementary School learned all about bats during a hands-on life science presentation from the Long Island Science Center.

Students learned about the one-of-a-kind nocturnal mammal’s special function in the ecosystem and important information, including what they often eat, where they live, and how they find food using echolocation. To model echolocation, the presenter performed a simulation, asking students to close their eyes as she moved around the room, making sounds, and asking them if they could identify where she was standing.

Students were given an up-close look at real-life bats as examples of the mammal encased in resin were passed amongst the students. After the presentation, students made their very own bat puppets.
