In honor of Fire Prevention Month, kindergartners from Sylvan Avenue Elementary School visited the Bayport Fire Department for an interactive presentation on fire safety and prevention.
Sitting inside the firehouse, Bayport firefighters gave an enthusiastic presentation, emphasizing the importance of knowing what it means to call 911, knowing one’s address in case of emergency, what to do in a smoke-filled room and having both an escape plan and meeting place in case of a fire. The kindergartners also learned the “stop, drop and roll” technique in case their clothing ever caught fire.
Students got an up-close look at a firefighter in full uniform, learning about the sounds it can make, how it protects them and the functionality of its parts. They also learned details about the firehouse equipment and headed outside for an even closer look at the fire trucks. Each student had the chance to operate a working fire hose and examine the inside of a fire truck.
