Academy Street goes batty with the Long Island Science Center

Second graders at Academy Street Elementary learned all about bats during a hands-on life science presentation from the Long Island Science Center.

Students learned about the nocturnal mammal’s special function in the ecosystem, what they often eat, where they live and how they find food using echolocation. To model echolocation, the presenter asked students to close their eyes as she moved around the room, making sounds, and asked them if they could identify where she was standing.

Students were given a close look at real-life bats as examples of the mammal encased in resin were passed around. After the presentation, students cut out and colored their very own bat “puppets” with movable wings.
