In honor of Fire Prevention Month, firefighters from the Bayport Fire Department visited Academy Street Elementary School for a lively presentation on fire safety and a firetruck demonstration.

Firefighter Ray Cooney spoke to students at all grade levels about the importance of calling 911 and what to say during the call. He also emphasized the importance of having smoke alarms in the home and what to do if you’re ever trapped in a room during a fire. To remember “stop, drop and roll,” the students learned a catchy tune, singing, “If my clothes catch on fire, I stop, drop and roll. It never gets old to stop, droll and roll!”

Students got an up-close look at a firefighter in full uniform, learning about the sounds the uniform can make, how it protects them and the functionality of its parts. Then, they headed outside for a closer look at a real fire truck. Students waved in awe as the ladder attached to the truck lifted above Academy Street. They then examined the inside of the truck.
