Kindergarten

Kindergarten is a place where children start to view themselves as active learners. This is a time where kindergartners grow and develop attitudes toward school and learning. This attitude will be carried with them throughout the rest of their school years. Learning is fun in Kindergarten!

Grade 1

In first grade we teach the children to become curious lifelong learners. We explore many aspects of the reading process to help the children become independent readers and deep thinkers. We use the writer's workshop approach to teach the writing process as they develop narrative and expository pieces of writing. Mathematics instruction is balanced and focuses on the why, the how, and the when of mathematics so children understand, see connections, make generalizations, and use knowledge effectively. The children are taught to be inquisitive as we study topics including physical, life, and earth science. Our first grade classrooms build a strong sense of community where the children can make their own decisions, respect the rights and opinions of others, build self-confidence, and work and play cooperatively so children feel safe in their learning environment. 1st Grade is a very exciting place at Sylvan!

Grade 2

The second grade curriculum acknowledges the growing awareness of the child by further developing the reading skills and deepening the understanding of mathematics. Simple Language Arts, Spelling, and Grammar are introduced, along with consistent practice of printing capital and lower case letters. Also, reading development proceeds with the introduction of printed readers which are included with the curriculum. The child's growing awareness is reflected also in mathematics, where the multiplcation tables are developed.
