Superintendent's Message

August 30, 2018

Dear Bayport-Blue Point Families,

I hope you are having a wonderful summer and are finding time to relax and unwind with family and friends. On behalf of my colleagues and our Board of Education, I am proud to welcome you to another exciting year in the Bayport-Blue Point School District.

Over the summer months, the district completed several key updates in the areas of both infrastructure and safety and security. As part of our community-approved bond project, spaces at each of our school buildings were refurbished. These improvements included the renovation of the middle school library (which we anticipate will be completed the second week of September), home and careers room, and science labs, as well as the replacement of the gymnasium floor at Academy Street Elementary, the replacement of windows at Sylvan Elementary, and the renovation of the main office at Blue Point Elementary (still in progress). For a complete list of projects and to view photos from all phases of construction, please visit the bond information tab on the district homepage, www.bbpschools.org.

With a continued focus on safety, two-layer security vestibules were installed at each school building (Blue Point’s will be installed following the completion of main office renovation) and a new visitor management system has been installed district-wide. As we begin to use the new electronic system this fall, I ask for your patience when visiting our schools. While entry to our buildings may take a few minutes longer, this system will enable the district to better monitor who is entering our buildings. I also ask for your cooperation in adhering to the rules for visiting our schools – these include entering through the main entrance only (all other doors will be locked), providing a copy of your driver’s license/photo ID upon arrival, and wearing your issued badge throughout the duration of your visit.

You will also notice a greater presence of security personnel this school year. The district has increased the number of hours our security guards are on duty, as well as appointed a Lead Guard of Security to oversee our daily operations. As the safety and security of our students and staff remains our paramount concern, we will continue to examine and identify ways to enhance our practices and procedures.

Recognizing the importance of a strong home-to-school connection, I encourage all families to keep an open line of communication with their child’s school and our district as a whole. We utilize a number of communication platforms to share news and information with the community, including our district website, official Twitter accounts and e-blast/Connect Ed calls. Please be sure to follow us and make sure that your current phone numbers and email accounts are on file in our system.

As an administrator whose professional roots began in the classroom, as well as a parent, one of the things I look forward to each year is the first day of school. From establishing family traditions – such as those famous first-day photos on the front porch – to preparing the night before to ensure a smooth morning, the day evokes a number of positive memories for me each year. As we look to celebrate this year’s opening day, I invite all families to tag any first-day photos with us on Twitter (@BBPSchools or @BBPSupt) and use the hashtag #BBPOpeningDay2018.  I would love for us to come together as a school community to share and celebrate this special time – a time for new beginnings and fresh starts.

I extend my warmest and best wishes for a successful 2018-19 school year.

Sincerely,

Dr. Timothy Hearney
Superintendent of Schools
